The Horse Laundry

1st September 2003

Now, cleaning rugs is nothing new to horse owners and a chore best avoided, not only because of the difficulties of eradicating rolled in stains but trying to dry them thoroughly in our unpredictable climate is nothing short of a logistical nightmare.  Rest assured, The Horse Laundry will remove all those worries and cares from your life.

From the moment the initial contact is made the Horse Laundry flows smoothly in a well-rehearsed and thoughtful manner.  A straightforward telephone call results in a laminated wallet arriving through the post a couple of days later.  Clear, simple instructions are given; the rug is identified, labelled and dispatched via The Horse Laundry’s own vehicle (no more smelly, dirty rugs to hump around in the car)!  From that moment on you can relax.  Back at the unit the rugs are assessed and if needed at this stage, power washed down although the Horse Laundry owner, John, remarks that very few rugs require this treatment. The second stage of the process is to wash the rugs using a powerful commercial washing machine from Miele.  Once again the attention to detail is impressive and much work has been undertaken to test the ph. of the water to ensure that there is not too much acidity.  The highly sophisticated and expensive machinery goes through an extensive pre-wash and soak before detergent is automatically dispensed.  On the second rinse, if necessary a liquid reproofer is also dispensed.  After the normal spinning cycle the rugs are warm air dried in the commercial equivalent of a tumble drier. At this point rugs are vacuumed and any repairs necessary are undertaken taking into account colour and fabric match where possible.

The whole process could well end there with the now cleaned, repaired and reproofed rug dispatched to its owner.  However, the Horse Laundry with his meticulous care and attention to detail has chosen to return the rug wrapped in soft tissue paper in a strong, see- through plastic bag printed with the company logo and heat sealed.  A sensible gap is left in the bag which enables the rug to breathe and the clean smell of freshly laundered rugs to permeate the air.

The desire to get the finished product and the customer care and satisfaction right is what shines through strongly with this business from start to finish. The whole idea is well researched and thought out and definitely going places.  Without a doubt there are more of these excellent horse laundries still to come!

A perfect solution to washing horse rugs

August 2003

Cleaning rugs is nothing new to horse owners and a chore best avoided, not only because of the difficulties of eradicating rolled in stains but trying to dry them thoroughly in our unpredictable climate is nothing short of a logistical nightmare.  Rest assured, The Horse Laundry will remove all those worries and cares. Owners & horses alike can benefit from the new business venture of leading horse dentist John Edmunds. based in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

Using professional washing machines and tumble dryers developed for this purpose by German manufacturer Miele, rugs are washed to extremely high standards ridding rugs of smells, stains and hair. A specific detergent was developed especially to ensure rugs are not only spotless but also gentle to horse’s skin. Re-proofing outdoor rugs is made simpler and more effective with the use of the re-proofing programme on the machines.

Detail to cleanliness and quality of the end product is considered right through to the packing of the clean rugs.  Rugs are neatly rapped in tissue paper, packed into aerated plastic bags and heat sealed to maintain the freshly washed smell and to make storage easy until the next time they are needed.

The desire to get the finished product and the customer care and satisfaction right is what shines through strongly with the Horse Laundry from start to finish.

Rug Rescue for HorseWorld

January 2005

HorseWorld, the South West’s premier equine charity, was delighted to accept 23 rugs from local company, The Horse Laundry.  In addition to their laundering services, The Horse Laundry also collects rugs and blankets that are no longer needed by their owners.  Once they have been cleaned and repaired, they are donated to local equine charities.

The Horse Laundry is a venture of John Edmunds; an equine dentist in the Trowbridge area.  John collects, cleans, waterproofs, and repairs rugs using professional washing machines and tumble dryers, ridding rugs of smells, stains and hair.  The rugs are cleaned, repaired if needed and then neatly packed into aerated plastic bags and delivered back to the customer.

John also asks customers if they can donate any unwanted rugs or blankets to his Rug Rescue.  HorseWorld, based in Whitchurch in Bristol, is one charity helped by The Horse Laundry.  John Edmunds donated 23 rugs to help neglected and unwanted horses during a visit to the charity’s welfare department at Keynes Farm.  Jerry Watkins, Welfare Manager, was amazed at the quantity and quality of the donation.  He said,  “I would like to thank all the people who donated their unused rugs to the Rug Rescue at The Horse Laundry.  The rugs are truly appreciated and will certainly help us out in the winter months.  We are very grateful to the Horse Laundry for their donation, which really will save us a lot of money”.

HorseWorld was formed in 1952 and many of the horses it helps have been saved from appalling conditions of neglect and abandonment; others arrive when their owners, for a multitude of reasons, are unable to look after them.  The charity’s work to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home equines in need is totally reliant on the generosity of the public.  Without their support, HorseWorld would be unable to help any horses, ponies and donkeys and so donations such as these are vital to its work.
